Creation Appreciation: Oxeye Floral Co.

This is an appreciation post for the lovely Oxeye Floral Co. who I have been following for years on Instagram… all the way back to when she was still called Gypsy Skulls. The original name came from her first pressed flower design–a floral skull–which is still one of my favorites as I love the combination of gothic and delicate. Oxeye Floral designs are created and crafted by Ayla Graham. She uses pressed flowers to create stunning images that are then turned into prints. Her designs have also been transformed into patterns for throw blankets and pillows, scarves, purses, and more. Ayla’s art has been sold in several small stores, and one significant one: the ever-fashionable Anthropologie. Still, she is a small business, working by herself from her home. And if there’s one thing I appreciate, it’s a hard-working crafter-gal, as I have been one myself. The care and delicacy Ayla puts into her designs are evident: lovely little touches for an animal’s nose or tail and carefully curated flowers that are specific to each design, bringing them to life. There is a fluidity to the owl’s feathers and a reason certain petals were chosen over others. And that kind of craftsmanship takes time and care–obvious factors in her work… not to mention her creativity is off the charts. Her latest designs include a touch of humor: animal bums. And really, who couldn’t use a bit of humor in our current climate? Ayla’s creativity, care for detail, and dedication are some of the things I love about small business owners and supporting their creativity. Plus, supporting one small shop helps support others; Oxeye Floral Co. has currently been donating 100% of the proceeds from their Easter and Quarantine Cards to the Calgary Foodbank in response to the current health crisis. In turn, it’s a simple thing for me to do to share little shops that have made me happy over the years. Hopefully, it will bring some attention, however small, to a shop with beautiful work that gives back. And hopefully, it makes you happy, too. Ayla’s creations are the perfect home addition for any time of year, but are an especially dreamy touch for spring! You can purchase her artwork here.
